TASK 1
Read Kevin Maher (The Times film critic) on Trolls World Tour (Universal).
Use the case study to respond to the following 2 exam essays separately, so 2 paragraphs. Keep each to three or four crisp, factual sentences. Bonus points: refer to Netflix, disruption, your own film consumption.
Essay question 1: How far has digital technology changed patterns of distribution? (2015)
- Universal released Trolls to home media for audiences to view. This received significant backlash. However, Universal did not care and have since released another film via home media. Due to events like corona virus many theatrical runs have been cut short and numerous films were taken off the calendar and given new release dates.
- Digital technology has a big change on distribution
- Matt smith of FDA: how trailers and clips are shown on screen to fit a phone
- theatrical run, theatrical chain, home media
-Netflix is the disruptor.
- Online streaming such as Netflix and Amazon prime are more accessible as can be viewed online at home
- Mayer suggests that if big Hollywood studios realise their blockbuster straight into consumers home then it could signify the end of cinema-going because many smaller studios would follow.
Use Universal's home media release of Trolls as an example and consider whether this is a trend (in studio behaviour) with studios copying the disruptive model of Netflix
Essay question 2: To what extent does audience behaviour determine changes in the media industry? (2015)
- Audiences prefer a quick and easy way to watch a film which makes streaming services more attractive e.g. sky store, amazon prime, Netflix. This makes cinemas less popular.
- Children's films are preferred to watch from home as it is more difficult for parents to take their young children to the cinema; cinemas have become less popular with the upcoming of online streaming services becoming more widely used
- However, some older generation audiences (35+) prefer the experience of going to the cinema and watching a new film on the big screen.
TASK 2
Revise our case study for Disney Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Use these materials here about Disney as a conglomerate - also use these words: megafranchise, synergy, as in a conglomerate like Disney, targets its audiences through a vertically integrated web of companies that cross-promote each film using synergy. This is known as vertical integration.
- The unending promotion of Star Wars on Disney's platforms is a deliberate strategy by the company itself. Disney may well be the master of cross-promotion, a skill it honed with its iconic, family-friendly characters.
- For example, BuzzFeed cannot compete with the mass market scope that Disney has. But media consolidation has long been a trend, and upstarts such as VICE and BuzzFeed may look more and more tempting to old media conglomerates, following in the trend of the recent acquisition of Business Insider by German publishing giant Axel Springer.

You are getting there but this doesn't yet read as an essay answer would read. What exactly was the 'backlash'?
