RESEARCH: AUDIENCE QUESTIONAIRE

Audience questionnaire -

I used Google forms to create a questionnaire for my audience to take, this is useful because  I can look at the trends in our audience which will help me to construct a film that will appeal to this target audience. I intend to publish this on my blog and send this to people who are likely to watch our film. I will ask questions referring to age, gender, what types of films they prefer to watch and where they are likely to watch them. Our group wanted to make a film that would appeal to young people aged 15-35 this questionnaire will be useful to ensure that our type of genre (Drama) will appeal to this audience. Through the use of google forms I will be able to collect this data.

These are the questions I intend to ask:

PLANNING: TARGET AUDIENCE

I needed to plan how to reach my target audience. I also needed to know who they were. I had to research age, gender, ethnicity and social class. I also needed to research what their media needs were so that I could produce a product that they will want. Finally, in order to market our movie, I had to know how to reach them. I will show how my research has influenced my planning by answering the question below along with pictures to help support my answers.

We started by studying different brands and how they define their audience We then tried to find out why our audience would be interested in our genre. Our film is targeted to an audience of 15-35 year olds, mainly girls who's main interest surround around social media etc. People around this are are mainly able to drive so they may have an interest in cars which we can incorporate into our film.

1. Who is my primary target audience?

British young people aged 15-35 who enjoy a variety of genres including drama films and suspense.

2. What kind of films and television are they likely to prefer?

After we did some research of various films we thought that 'a simple favor' would be popular with out target audience because it is a more mature drama-thriller that is about a secret twin. Once Emily disappears, Stephanie starts digging and, after a long journey, finds out that Emily's been lying about her identity. Her real name is Faith and she's got an identical twin named Hope. This is similar to our story because our protagonist is going to disappear also after facing a scandal also.

3. What platforms do they choose to watch films and where are they likely to see information about films?

Our audience is likely to enjoy a film at the cinema; for example the new, more modern and trendy cinemas such as Everyman and Curzon would appeal to our younger audience. However, it may also appeal to them to see a film at the comfort of their own home by using platforms such as Netflix and Sky.
4. What brands do they prefer?
I did some research into what out target audience would be interested in; For food and drink I chose Nando's and Starbucks as this is a popular choice among a young and older age group. For clothing; Calvin Klein, Urban outfitters and Nike trainers are well liked among boys and girls as they sell good quality trendy clothes and shoes for this age group. Also, social media is depicted as this is a large time consumer of young peoples lives nowadays and the Kardashians become a big platform on social media. A fiat 500 is shown as it is a very popular choice of car for young people due to its cute and friendly appearance.

5. What makes my film stand out from the competition?

Our film takes an individual approach to the typical drama, with our film portraying a different sense of mystery where the audience is unaware of the scandal and where our protagonist is in a rush to go. It includes a realistic insight to the life of a struggling celebrity and the attempt to become normal again which is different from our other competitors who mainly focus on the over dramatised life of a celebrity.

. Why should my audience watch my film?

This film would appeal strongly to my audience because the films they enjoy to watch carry similar traits to this film. Also, are target audience take a large interest and obsession in keeping up with the scandals of celebrities through the media which will be heavily focused on in our film. Also, are film will be in a modern setting reflected on our choice of misè-en-scene which will attract our younger audience.

PLANNING: TOPLINE AND BIG QUESTION

I learned from Frank Ark, creative consultant with the BBC Academy, about 'digital storytelling'. Which is a method of connecting an audience to a story that is relevant to them by choosing a specific theme. This will cause them to be left with a feeling of anticipation and interest.

When I begin to do my foundation production I will be creating my own top line and deciding on the big question. Frank Asch has helped to give me a structure of how to do this and what factors I need to take into consideration before I begin doing my own. I turned what I learnt into a comic using comic life.

RESEARCH: SCOOPIT! FILM OPENINGS

I used the website scoop it and created my own scoops by linking in opening scenes of films that I found interesting and writing my own insight about them. I chose three very different films that appealed to me as they would all be grouped into different genres.
